It’s been said that everything happens for a reason… but sometimes the reason is you’re stupid and make bad decisions.
One woman in Virginia just found that that actions have consequences after she was featured in a viral photo of herself “flipping off” President Trump.
She apparently thought the obscene finger was hilarious, but her employer did not. The company — which is a U.S. government contractor — promptly gave her a gesture of their own and fired her within days.
“As Trump returned from the Trump National Golf Club in Sterling, Va., Sunday, Oct. 29, a woman later self-identified as Julie Briskman, made the rude gesture to the president’s motorcade twice as she was cycling on the same road,” explained The Daily Caller.
“At the time, Briskman was working for Akima LLC, a Virginia-based company that holds several government contracts, doing marketing and communications work,” continued the Caller.
It turns out that Akima has a policy against lewd or obscene gestures on social media.
When Briskman’s middle finger image exploded online, they were concerned that their employee obscenely gesturing to the president of the United States might impact future government contracts.
Virginia is an employment-at-will state, which means that employers have significant freedom to fire unsatisfactory employees for almost any reason.
In an interview with the Huffington Post, the now-unemployed cyclist went on an anti-Trump tirade.
“He was passing by and my blood just started to boil,” she said. “I’m thinking, DACA recipients are getting kicked out. He pulled ads for open enrollment in Obamacare. Only one-third of Puerto Rico has power.”
Puerto Rico is almost exclusively run by Democrats and DACA recipients are illegal aliens who don’t respect the law. Hey, disorganized, disrespectful and unemployable — sounds familiar!
“I flipped off the motorcade a number of times,” Briskman admitted, before adding that she was hoping to be hired by a group she believes in, such as Planned Parenthood or PETA. She’ll probably fit right in.
Why are “tolerant, co-existing” liberals so angry and bitter? To be sure, flipping the president the bird isn’t exactly the crime of the century, but would it be the end of the world to show a bit of respect?
Within the military, it’s well known that you salute the rank, not the man. This means, of course, that even if you don’t personally like a commanding officer, you still show respect for the uniform and what it represents.
The same applies to the president of the United States. For example, Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton were not well respected within the U.S. military — but they were still shown respect and courtesy by America’s armed forces. They recognized that the office is bigger than the man or pantsuit-wearing woman holding it.
No, an employee of a government contractor is not a solider, but wouldn’t the country be a bit better off if we adopted this approach? “Not My President” signs be damned, Donald Trump holds the highest office in the United States, and that position supersedes his personal faults or merits as a man.
A bit of extra civility wouldn’t hurt America… and it just might be a welcome change to an increasingly divided nation.
