Steve Scalise, the House Majority Whip was among the two individuals that were shot this Wednesday morning during a GOP baseball training at an Alexandria, Virginia, ball field, NBC News reported.
As two senior GOP aides claim, he was in good condition. One the sources stated that the Republican lawmaker was shot in the hip. Both sources added that one Capitol Police officer was also shot.
The Police stated it was probing reports of a “multiple shooting” and that the suspect was “in custody” and “not a threat.” The hurt ones were taken to the hospital instantly.
Sen. Rand Paul, who was there with the lawmakers at the moment, told MSNBC that Scalise as a House leader always has Capitol Police with him as security detail. Scalise has represented Louisiana’s 1st District since 2008. At first it was not immediately certain if the wounded officer was part of Scalise’s detail.
Rep. Steve Pearce of New Mexico took to Twitter and posted that he was at the GOP’s baseball practice and was “alright.”
The US president issued a statement after he was notified: “The Vice President and I are aware of the shooting incident in Virginia and are monitoring developments closely. We are deeply saddened by this tragedy. Our thoughts and prayers are with the members of Congress, their staffs, Capitol Police, first responders, and all others affected.”
In addition, our thoughtful First Lady Melania Trump also took to Twitter to share thoughts about the case.
She wrote, “Thank you to the first responders who rushed in to help protect those who were hurt in Alexandria, VA. My thoughts & prayers to everyone!”
